Sustainability Framework

At The Retreat Koh Chang, sustainability is the cornerstone of our operations and design. Our ESG program is dedicated to preserving Koh Chang's natural beauty and making a lasting positive impact on the community. We integrate sustainability into every facet of our resort, from construction using reclaimed teakwood to daily operations managed by a cross-functional team of experts.

Key Initiatives

Energy Efficiency and Conservation

The Retreat Koh Chang uses solar rooftop systems to supply a significant portion of our daytime electricity needs, with plans to expand our capacity. We utilize energy-efficient appliances and double-glazed insulated glass panels to reduce cooling demands.

Water Management

Recognizing the limited fresh water resources on the island, we have developed a comprehensive water production system that processes various water sources into potable water. We emphasize water conservation through the use of low-flow fixtures, leak detection systems, and treated wastewater recycling.

Waste Management

Our waste management strategy includes composting, bio-control, and recycling. We operate a compost facility that processes organic waste into soil for our gardens. We separate and recycle glass, paper, plastic, and metal waste, aiming to minimize environmental impact.

Building Practices

We emphasize sustainable building practices, utilizing reclaimed teakwood sourced from houses in Northern Thailand, giving hundred-year-old wood a second life. This approach not only preserves resources but also integrates historical elements into our modern designs.

Gardening and Biodiversity

Our gardens are 100% pesticide-free and fungicide-free. We use non-harmful biological control agents to manage plant diseases and invasive species. We also ensure a rich biodiversity by planting native flora and rare plant species, maintaining harmony with the local landscape and climate.

Community Engagement

Local Sourcing and Support

We focus on local sourcing for our culinary offerings, obtaining fresh seafood from local fishermen and fruits from regional farms. Our F&B operations follow sustainable practices, including waste separation and the use of eco-friendly cleaning supplies. We support local artisans by incorporating handmade furniture, artwork, and in-room accessories from local communities.

Education and Outreach

We actively engage with the local community through programs like Koh Chang Trash Hero. Our resort is working towards becoming a learning center for sustainable practices, sharing insights on bio-control, composting, and GAP farming with other resorts and the community. We participate in various community events and contribute to local development projects, such as the K-Avenue community mall project.

Community Development

We regularly take part in volunteering work and donations, supporting local schools, temples, and communities. Our K-Avenue community mall project aims to offer high-quality, affordable food to local residents and reduce food waste at our properties.

Guest Experiences

We offer guests unique experiences that highlight our sustainability efforts, such as Thai cooking classes, fruit carving, and traditional Thai events like Songkran and Loy Kratong. We aim to educate guests on the importance of sustainability through these interactive activities.
